Birmingham City have been encouraged to strike an ambitious return for ex-starlet Nathan Redmond, who is currently plying his trade with Scott Parker's Burnley but finds himself subjected to reported interest from his boyhood side.

Although their promotion credentials have been unsurprisingly underlined in League One so far this season following a sensational summer spending spree, there is a school of thought that Birmingham still need to source additional star-quality in order to push themselves over the line and back into the Championship unhitched come May - or earlier, even.

Birmingham were widely tipped to lift the third-tier title at a canter but it's not currently playing out quite according to that plan for Chris Davies' side, who are second in the division and one point behind shock league leaders Wycombe Wanderers, although they do have a game in hand over their promotion rivals.

It's hard to knock Birmingham's season too much, really, but there was an expectation that they would blitz League One opposition at will. You can't say they've done that just yet, though they do nonetheless appear to be strong value for automatic promotion.

That pursuit could be aided by the return of Redmond, who is reportedly on their radar ahead of a stunning potential January deal.

Birmingham's transfer interest in Burnley's Nathan Redmond

According to a recent report from The Sun, Blues are interested in striking a loan deal for Redmond next month. The 30-year-old wide-man hasn't played for the Clarets since suffering a long-term injury all the way back in January, although he appeared in three matchday squads at the end of November without getting off the bench.

He's clearly out of favour under Parker, who does have vast wide options at his disposal but seemingly doesn't intend on calling upon the one-time England international's services, and that could just open the door for Blues to land him in a deal which would represent yet another statement of intent.

Redmond, of course, is one of many Blues academy products to have gone on to enjoy top-flight success. The winger made his debut for Birmingham at the tender age of 16 and enjoyed two impressive seasons at Championship level as a teenager before leaving for Norwich City for a reported £3.2 million fee in the summer of 2013.

The ex-Southampton attacker has made close to 300 appearances in the Premier League, along with earning caps for England from under-17 level all the way to the senior side, so his potential return to the Second City would be welcomed by supporters while resembling a huge boost for Birmingham heading into the decisive stages of the promotion race.

Birmingham City verdict offered on Burnley's Nathan Redmond amid transfer talk

Following the emergence of Birmingham's interest, we asked our resident Blues fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, if he would be happy with the signing of Redmond.

Mike believes it would be a massive coup for his side, and he still regards Redmond as one of his all-time favourite Blues players to this day.

"I think it would be an absolutely fantastic move," Mike told Football League World.

"I'm a massive fan of Redmond, he's one of my favourites Blues players of all time. I can remember him bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old, he was fantastic for us so it would be great to see him come home.

"I think we're probably lacking a little bit in the wide areas, so he is a good fit for what we're looking for and what we need. A loan at this level, with the amount of talent and experience he's got, would be excellent."

"We've just got to hope we can get him and keep him fit, he can add a lot of goals and assists."
