Cardiff City have been urged not to appoint former Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe as their new boss after he admitted that he would be open to discussions over the vacancy in the Welsh capital.

The Bluebirds are yet to appoint a replacement for Erol Bulut after he was sacked last month following just one point from the first six games of the new season.

Lowe has been out of work since a shock departure from Deepdale by mutual consent just one game into the campaign, as he felt it was time to move on in the best interests of himself and the club.

The 46-year-old has been touted as a possible appointment for the Bluebirds as they continue to seek a replacement for Bulut, but, according to the bookmakers, is in competition with current caretaker boss Omer Riza, as well as Tony Mowbray, Slaven Bilic and Steven Schumacher.

Cardiff City told to avoid potential Ryan Lowe appointment

Lowe appeared as a pundit on Sky Sports last week, and was very open in his answer when the possibility of taking over at Cardiff was put forward to him.

The 46-year-old said: "I can't say anything you don't already know, but what I will say is I think Cardiff City is a fantastic football club and very attractive to any manager who is out of work.

"They have a great fan base and are probably in a false position because they've got some quality players and they've got a fantastic youth system.

"It's an attractive job, not just for myself but I'm sure Gary (Rowett) is the same, and any other manager out of work, you'd be open to speaking to them, of course."

Lowe made his feelings about the job quite clear, but FLW's Bluebirds fan pundit, Jack Price, does not want the 46-year-old to take over as boss in the Welsh capital, and was pretty adamant in his answer when we asked him if he would welcome the appointment.

“Would I welcome the appointment of Ryan Lowe? I don’t think I would," Jack told Football League World.

“I don’t think he represents the type of manager that we need at this moment in time.

“(Preston fans) were all quite happy to see him go when he left after one game into the new season, and I think he rubbed fans up the wrong way.

“With Cardiff, keeping the fans onside is massive, and once you lose that trust, that faith with the fanbase, you are always on borrowed time.

“I think there is quite a lot that I would count against Lowe, obviously he has come out and made his feelings clear about the Cardiff job, almost asking for it, it does seem like.

“There have been reports saying that he is among the names being considered, whether that is the case remains to be seen.

“I would not be happy if we appointed Lowe.”

Ryan Lowe style of play concern issued by Cardiff City fan pundit

It is clear that Lowe would not be a welcome appointment to some Cardiff supporters, but on the face of it, his record at Preston was relatively decent, and the Bluebirds arguably need such a manager at this moment in time to get them out of their current rut.

With that said, Jack went on to explain that his style of play and lack of faith in young players would be the main reasons as to why he would not want to see him take charge.

Price added: “(Lowe's) style of play is very direct.

“I think there is a big hankering among Cardiff fans for us to bring in a manager who knows how to get the best out of Rubin Colwill, because he is our most sellable asset and most talented player.

“Obviously, to get the best out of a player like Colwill, the style of play needs to be cohesive and progressive, and I don’t think Lowe would bring that.

“I don’t think he would bring in a style of play that would have this Cardiff side going at teams and playing on the front foot, which is the way that we all the team to be playing.

“Would he develop the youth? (That) is another big call of duty really, from the board and also from what the fans want to see. I don’t know about that.

“He just doesn’t feel like the sort of manager that I think would really build the foundations for something successful in the long-term, and that is what we need."

Concerns over Lowe's preferred set-up are supported by facts, as Preston attempted the most long passes of any team in the Championship last season, were in the bottom three teams for pass completion percentage, created the second-least big chances, and were in the bottom six for average possession, according to FBref and Sofascore.

It remains to be seen whether he will be the next man tasked with taking Cardiff on to bigger and better things than recent years, but the club surely need to make a decision soon to give their new boss ample time to bed in at the club.
