Sint Truiden have had a crazy week on and off the pitch. The side sacked head coach Felice Mazzu, tried and failed to get Hernan Losada to join and then went and beat Cercle Brugge 3-1 in what could be a defining moment of the relegation play-offs. On top of this, they also managed to secure a new head coach in Wouter Vrancken before that game, yet as he was currently away he will only take charge on Tuesday.
The victory, plus the appointment of a talented coach like Vrancken, surely now makes Sint Truiden the favourites to finish top of the four team group and avoid relegation. Vrancken may not have been as successful as he would have liked with Gent, but he did almost win the league with Genk and was highly rated during his time at Mechelen. The size of Sint Truiden should suit him, and there are plenty of players in the side that he can use to play entertaining football.
Vrancken’s first game in charge will be away to Cercle Brugge. The home victory means that the side will remain top of the table with a draw. Having already faced Sint Truiden a number of times while at Gent, Vrancken will also be familiar with the side, so any settling in period should not take too long.
Following the sides 3-0 home defeat to Kortrijk just over a week ago now, everything looked to be falling apart at the club. Now, with an important three points secured and a top manager about to take over, things are suddenly looking much better for the Canaries.
