Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their year with a slim win over Leicester City in the Women’s Super League. An agonising own goal from Janina Leitzig just four minutes in cost the Foxes a valuable point, as Spurs clung onto their early lead.

Leicester had some chances on goal but with ultimately struggled, with no out-and-out striker available due to injuries.

Janina Leitzig error hands Spurs a boost

Leicester fans were shocked to see former Fox Lize Kop up against them in the Spurs starting lineup. The Netherlands international only signed from for their WSL rivals earlier this week. The Foxes may regret the decision to let her go, too.

An error from shot-stopper Leitzig led to Spurs’ first and only goal inside five minutes. Tottenham attacked early on and some great play in the final third found Amanda Nildén free on the edge of the Leicester area. She crossed the ball in and it caught Leitzig off guard in goal. The ball clipped the goalkeeper’s heel and went into her own net.

The away fans might have wished they could get back on their coach, especially as Leicester should have equalised soon after. Saori Takarada piled on the pressure to win the ball high up in the Spurs half. She squared it across the box but Janice Cayman skewed it wide from a few yards out.

Leicester fans had something to cheer at the return of Sam Tierney in midfield after time out with injury. she came on alongside Shannon O’Brien to offer the Foxes something more direct in attack. Tierney started brightly and some play on the right edge of the box found Missy Goodwin, but her shot was well handled by Kop. The 75th minute saw Ruby Mace strike from outside the box for Leicester but her shot curled wide beyond the diving Kop.

It was a frustrating day for Leicester, who remain in 11th place in the WSL table. However, it was a great start to 2025 for Tottenham, who leapfrog Liverpool and go into sixth.

Coming up next

Tottenham have the League Cup quarter-final against West Ham next up on January 22nd. They then return to WSL action four days later against Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Leicester are back at the King Power Stadium on January 26th to host Liverpool in the league.
