‘You’re not necessarily in a good place’ – Thilo Kehrer reflects on being put in the PSG ‘loft’ | OneFootball

At Paris Saint-Germain, Thilo Kehrer (27) grew as a person and as a player. Having moved to Paris from Germany at the age of 21, he went on to win three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France titles and one Coupe de la Ligue. However, as Les Parisiens sought to herald a new era, Kehrer was one of the players labelled expendable.

The German international was put in the infamous PSG ‘loft’ where undesirable players are isolated from the first team with a view to a departure. Speaking exclusively to Get French Football News, Kehrer opened up on this experience.

“There is that side of football. There is more competitiveness, more games and financially the game is growing and it is becoming more of a business,” began the AS Monaco centre-back. “It isn’t a situation that you like to experience and that isn’t viewed positively. For a player, for his mentality, for his confidence, you always want to be wanted, to be respected, to be valued and when that isn’t the case and you find yourself in a ‘loft’, of course, you’re not necessarily in a good place. You can say as well that it isn’t a personal choice, it’s often a club’s choice that wants to create or to change a team, so change players, to change the club’s or the team’s style. As a player, you have to do whatever is best for you,” he added.

Kehrer did leave PSG in the summer of 2022, joining West Ham United. He is now on loan at Monaco in a deal which does include the option to make the deal permanent.
