Manchester United return to action on Monday evening in hopes of ending their calamitous December, which has seen them sustain five defeats already, on something a high.
Ruben Amorim, like all managers post-Sir Alex Ferguson, has found himself at rock bottom after only a month in charge at Old Trafford.
The side spent Christmas Day in the bottom half of the table for the first time in Premier League history before seeing their spirits dampened further when sustaining a 2-0 defeat at the Molineux on Boxing Day, leaving them 14th-placed ahead of gameweek 19.
As for Monday’s visitors, Newcastle United, they endured a tumultuous start to the campaign but have since been able to find some consistency and are now well in the mix to claim European football next season after moving up to fifth place.

In terms of the options Amorim is likely to have at his disposal, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are, of course, sidelined – as is usually the case these days. Victor Lindelof, who’s also become injury-prone over the last year, sustained a fresh setback in the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and has yet to feature since.
The boss will be navigating the absences of key midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte courtesy of their one-match suspensions, the former for the red card he was shown vs Wolverhampton Wanderers and the latter due to him receiving a fifth yellow card last time out.
Nonetheless, here’s how we think Amorim could set his side up for a must-win contest.
Onana;
Yoro, Maguire, Martinez;
Mazraoui, Casemiro, Mainoo, Dalot;
Amad, Eriksen;
Christian Eriksen, who was lauded as ‘unbelievable’ by ex-teammate and Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson earlier this season, is likely to fill in for the unavailable Fernandes in what would come as only his fourth appearance under Amorim.

Rasmus Hojlund offered little to nothing against Wolves; he took only 14 touches, made one key pass, won one ground duel and one aerial duel, and lost possession seven times (as per Sofascore). He also failed to even register a shot in the 79 minutes he played, leaving Amorim no choice but to drop him this time around.
