Manchester United’s summer transfer activity is beginning to take shape, and Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a serious candidate to bolster their attacking options. With Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to provide consistent firepower, United’s need for a proven No.9 is becoming more pressing.
According to GiveMeSport, “Man Utd are aware that they will face stiff competition for the striker, which is why they are exploring a potential deal for Mateta, who, according to The Express, is available for £40million and was recently described as a ‘nightmare’ by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.”
The same report adds a key development for United supporters: “The 27-year-old French striker himself is ‘keen on joining the Manchester club’, which will come a huge boost for the Red Devils.”
United’s frontline has contributed just 39 goals across 34 Premier League games, a statistic unworthy of a club with top-four aspirations. Mateta, with 16 goals and six assists in 35 league appearances for Palace this season, could offer a more direct and physical presence.

While United continue their pursuit of top-tier forwards, the competition is intense. Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyökeres, and Harry Kane have all been linked, yet none are guaranteed signings. Ipswich striker Liam Delap is also under consideration, particularly with his £30m release clause now active following the club’s relegation.
However, Mateta presents a more attainable option. Experienced in the Premier League, the Frenchman has quietly built a reputation for reliability and disruption. Thierry Henry, speaking last summer, offered high praise: “He’s a boring striker to play against! He doesn’t lose the ball much, and he goes at the last defender. He uses his physicality, he’s good with his head, and he scores.”
Few endorsements carry more weight than one from a former professional. Paul Merson, speaking to Sky Sports, was glowing in his assessment: “He makes good runs, he’s strong, he’s quick and he’s a really good player. I thought Man Utd would go for him in the January transfer window.”
Merson continued: “He defends from the front and he’s a nightmare for defenders… I think he gets the move this summer.”
That kind of all-round forward play — leading the line, pressing, and holding up play — is exactly what United have lacked. Mateta’s profile fits not only the current tactical needs under Ruben Amorim but also offers a practical and financially sound solution.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Marcus Rashford’s season-ending injury could further shape United’s summer plans. The uncertainty surrounding his long-term fitness and potential exit may increase urgency in signing more than one attacking player.
Additionally, United are reportedly making a strong push for a La Liga goalkeeper, as part of a broader squad overhaul this summer.
From a Man United supporter’s perspective, Mateta may not scream marquee signing, but he might just be what the squad needs right now. While many fans are still dreaming of a £100m move for a Kane or Osimhen, reality suggests the club needs smart, targeted reinforcements — and Mateta ticks a lot of boxes.
He’s strong, Premier League-proven, and seems to thrive in physical contests — a profile this current United side sorely lacks. Moreover, his willingness to join the club adds weight to the move. That level of commitment can go a long way when building chemistry and drive within the dressing room.
Fans have grown tired of expensive flops and inconsistent performers. Mateta offers a track record of resilience and discipline — both traits needed in a team still trying to find its identity post-Ferguson. At £40m, it could be a gamble worth taking, especially if bigger-name options fall through.
He may not be the glamorous choice, but in the current landscape, he could be one of the more effective ones. For once, United might be wise to favour function over fantasy.
