Massimiliano Allegri is ready to end his hiatus and return to the bench a year after being sacked by Juventus, but there’s no frontrunner for his services for now. The coach was ready to go to Saudi Arabia in previous months. Though, the move fell through at the 11th hour, Fabrizio Romano reports (via SOSFanta).

The gaffer had agreed to a contract with Al-Ahli. He was supposed to join along with former Udinese boss Gabriele Cioffi, who would initially have served as the caretaker manager until the end of the season. However, the team changed its front office during the process. The new one stuck with Matthias Jaissle, who’s a fan favorite and is doing well.

After what occurred with the Middle Eastern franchise, Allegri is prioritizing European sides. That league is now a fallback plan should he fail to land a job in the Old Continent, preferably in Italy.

However, he’s not close to any particular side at the moment. The domino of directors isn’t complete, and the coaching carousel hasn’t properly started yet.

Our Take on Allegri

There are plenty of question marks and very few certainties at this stage. Juventus and Antonio Conte hold up the whole shebang. Napoli would be at the top of the list if their coach decided to bolt, which seems increasingly unlikely. Given his demeanor and how they have been playing lately, with plenty of ‘corto muso’ wins, he’d be a good fit at Roma. The economic aspect isn’t secondary, though. He wasn’t cheap beforehand, and with the Saudi money looming, a few outfits will be priced out.
