Galatasaray and Spain striker Alvaro Morata has spoken about one of his biggest regrets during an interview with El Larguero.
The striker has revealed he regrets joining AC Milan from Atletico Madrid for €13 million last summer.
Morata subsequently joined Galatasaray on loan in February. Reflecting on his decision, the striker admitted that leaving Atletico was a mistake.
“I should have thought more carefully about whether or not to leave Atletico,” Morata said.
“When you’re not feeling well at a certain point in your life, you make the wrong decisions in every aspect. Now, things can’t be changed anymore, and today I am very happy.
“If I could go back, I probably wouldn’t make that decision. I now realise that I wasn’t able to see reality.”
Morata says his mindset last summer clouded his judgment, and he ignored warnings from the people around him.
The opportunity to join Milan came up during the European Championship, and he decided to leave despite Atletico manager Diego Simeone’s efforts to keep him.
“The coach was calling me every day – I needed to feel loved and appreciated,” Morata added.
“Looking back, I realise that even Simeone cared about me. My father and my agent told me I was making a mistake.”
Morata’s future is unclear, with several Saudi Pro League clubs reportedly interested in signing him this summer.
However, he has not ruled out returning to one of Europe’s top leagues if a big club needs an experienced striker.
