Just a word on Anthony Gordon.

Take a breather from the current pile on.

Anthony Gordon having been red carded late on in the Brighton match.

Not only did that arguably prove to be a major factor in the outcome of this FA Cup fifth round match, it also now looks all but inevitable that Gordon will also miss the Carabao Cup Final, as well as the Premier League matches either side of that.

Although there again, according to certain Newcastle United fans, Anthony Gordon wouldn’t be that great a miss, considering some of the comments I have seen.

Apparently Anthony Gordon was really poor on Sunday and has indeed been in bad form generally for a while.

Honestly, I find it shocking the way some Newcastle United fans turn on our players so quickly. There has been barely a single one who hasn’t been targeted when they have had a setback or not in best of form, even Alexander Isak was a target earlier this season!

Fair enough, criticise Anthony Gordon for his rash moment that led to the red card (Although in reality that would never have been a red card in the past, no malice in it, not throwing a punch, just pushing the Brighton player) but don’t try and make out that this is just one small part of how Gordon has supposedly been letting us all down for a good while.

Even against Brighton, I thought Anthony Gordon was no better or worse than pretty much all our other players. Like them, I thought he looked good in the first half when Newcastle played well and dominated, then not so good when after the break Brighton were the better side. Not helped of course by a woeful referee who was on a mission to try and not book any Brighton player after the break, no matter what they did to stop Newcastle’s attacks.

The truth is that clearly, like all the rest of the Newcastle United players AND Newcastle fans, Anthony Gordon was getting increasingly frustrated in that second half.

He ended up falling into a trap and gave the chance for the shocking Anthony Taylor to finally take decisive action…

Anthony Gordon has given us all so much, I want to out my arm around him, not give him a kicking whilst he is down.

This will be now two cup finals Anthony Gordon has been ruled out of in his less than 26 months with Newcastle United,, having been cup-tied in February 2023.

He has though given us so much in these last couple of years.

Newcastle United player of the season in 2023/24, double figures in the Premier League for goals and assists.

Whilst this season Anthony Gordon has been in outstanding form again.

The last 16 Newcastle United matches before the Brighton FA Cup game when Anthony Gordon has played, with his direct goal involvements:

Newcastle 4 Leicester 0 – Anthony Gordon assist

Newcastle 3 Brentford 1 – Anthony Gordon assist

Ipswich 0 Newcastle 4 – Anthony Gordon assist

Newcastle 3 Villa 0 – Anthony Gordon goal

Man U 0 Newcastle 2 – Anthony Gordon assist

Spurs 1 Newcastle 2 – Anthony Gordon goal

Arsenal 0 Newcastle 2 – Anthony Gordon goal

Newcastle 3 Bromley 1 – Anthony Gordon goal

Newcastle 3 Wolves 0 – Anthony Gordon goal

Newcastle 1 Bournemouth 4

Southampton 1 Newcastle 3 – Anthony Gordon assist

Newcastle 1 Fulham 2

Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0 – Anthony Gordon goal

Man City 4 Newcastle 0

Newcastle 4 Forest 3

Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0

The recent away games at Man City and Liverpool were write-offs for Newcastle United in general but otherwise Anthony Gordon has been unbelievably good AND consistently so.

Against Forest he may not have got a goal or an assist but he was a key part in the move that led to Newcastle going 2-1 up and the same in the move that led to getting the penalty that made it 3-1.

Whilst against Fulham, he produced a brilliant turn and run that ended in effectively an assist, as his ball across got only a small touch off a defender, Murphy left with an easy finish thanks to Gordon.

This season so far it is 15 NUFC direct goal involvements in all competitions, scoring nine and getting six assists.

Anthony Gordon of course scored in both the home and away matches in the semi-final against Arsenal that got United to Wembley in the first place.
