Following Arsenal’s midweek draw with Crystal Palace, the Reds needed just a point to seal the trophy with four games to spare against Tottenham last weekend and ended up coming from behind to thrash Spurs 5-1 to kick off the party in style.

It was a memorable moment for Liverpool fans, who, due to Covid-19 restrictions, were not in the stadium when Klopp’s side finally ended their 30-year wait for a top-flight title back during the 2019/20 season. It also drew them level with fierce rivals Manchester United on a joint-record 20 league titles in total.

It has been a remarkable first campaign in charge on Merseyside for Dutchman Slot, who was hired from Feyenoord a year ago to replace Klopp, who stunned the football world last January to announce he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years due to “running out of energy”. He has since become the head of global soccer for Red Bull.

But the German clearly retains enormous affection for Liverpool and messaged successor Slot after last week’s title success, with Slot having paid glowing tribute to Klopp after the match and also sang his name to the jubilant crowd.

“Of course a lot of messages and they are nine out of 10 times the same but they come from a good heart and it's always nice to get these messages,” Slot said of the messages he’d received in the last week.

“I've tried to answer all of them, not by sending big messages but I've tried to answer all of them. It's been amazing, especially Sunday. It was maybe for all the Liverpool fans but for many of them one of the best days of their lives, and I think it was the same for me.

“The way the whole day went, arriving at the stadium, how intense the fans already were. Then during the game, going 1-0 behind so it even felt like, 'Oh, they are not going to give it to us. We have to work for it.' Scoring the goals, seeing how much it meant to the players but also to the fans and for me was really special to be part of.”

Asked who the most famous person to have messages was, he added: “I assume that's Jurgen. What did he have to say? What most of them said. So that was congratulations and now you know how special of a club it is, now you are part of the history as well – these kind of things.

“He was really happy for me, for the players, for the staff, for the fans, like we all know Jurgen [would be]. Maybe I forget a few but I think he was the most famous one.”
