As Chelsea continued to climb the Premier League table through October and November, Enzo Maresca continued his mantra – no, we’re not in a title race.

But the Blues kept winning, and the questions kept coming. A suspended Liverpool fixture then brought them within touching distance – finally, last week, Maresca’s team knew they could go top (albeit briefly) with a win over Everton.

Immediately, they choked, drawing 0-0. Their chance to get back on course was on Thursday against Fulham – and they choked again, this time letting a 1-0 lead slip late on and losing 2-1.

The moment first place actually because tangible, it vanished again. It just goes to show how much work there is to do to built up the mentalities of this young group if they ever want to compete in the gruelling marathon that is a Premier League title race.

Rice hails impressive and surprising Chelsea

Declan Rice turns out for Arsenal

After two bad results, Arsenal have been able to leapfrog us into second place. They’ve been sputtering and struggling for form, but have maybe found a gear now. Speaking to Amazon Prime after a 1-0 win over Ipswich last night, Declan Rice had a word about the Blues

“I think Chelsea have been outstanding, they’ve shocked everyone,” he said to the presenters.

“Everyone wrote them off at the start of the season and didn’t think they could do it [challenge for the title], they’ve been amazing the way they’re playing.”

It’s a lot easier for Rice to say now we’ve dropped points and fallen behind his team in the table. The question will be whether we can recover from two disappointments and get back onto a serious winning run. There’s no way we’ll catch Liverpool – or perhaps even Arsenal – without one. The pace is relentless, and every point is so precious.
