Aston Villa host Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final hoping to turn around a 3-1 deficit on Tuesday 15th April at 8pm. The Villans took the lead in the first leg but couldn’t hold onto it, now having a mountain to climb. This game will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was sensational in Paris last week, scoring a stunning second for Luis Enrique’s side, as he fired into the top corner past Emi Martinez. In total, the 24-year-old recorded five shots and he is averaging 3.4 per game in the Champions League this season. He has hit the target in all four European starts for PSG since making the switch from Napoli and can do so again here.
The Georgian was electric all night in the first leg and caused Villa serious problems, none more so than for Matty Cash, who committed four fouls and was carded. The 24-year-old has been fouled at least twice in three of his four starts in this competition and I expect the hosts to take no chances on stopping him on Tuesday.
Ousmane Dembele has scored in each of PSG’s past three Champions League away games. In fact, six of Dembele’s seven Champions League goals this season have come away from home. Domestically, he has 21 goals in Ligue 1 since the beginning of the campaign, and with Villa have to get on the front foot and score, I think PSG can pick them off with hopefully Demebele getting on the scoresheet.
Morgan Rogers is not the obvious choice when it comes to picking out an Aston Villa player to be carded. However, the 22-year-old has been shown more yellows this season than any other player for the club in the Premier League. In total, Rogers has been csautioned in eight of his 31 league outings this term, and has also been booked in the Champions League. Other firms have him as short as 3/1 to find his way into the book here, with Sky Bet going considerable bigger at 11/2. Combining him to be carded with Dembele to score makes a tasty look Bet Builder at 12/1.
There’s work to be done for Aston Villa. The Villans are in the quarter-finals of Europe’s top competition for the first time in 42 years, and they are fully deserving of it. But as things stand they may not reach the semi-finals. Unai Emery’s men have had a good run in the Champions League this season, finishing eighth in the group stage. They won five of their eight games, losing two and drawing once. They then beat Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in the last 16, setting up this dream occasion. The dream got even better as Morgan Rogers put Villa 0-1 up at the Parc des Princes, but it was not meant to be.
PSG still haven’t won the Champions League, despite all the money they have spent. And it’s brought a lot of scrutiny. But they’re in a good position to reach the semi-finals for the fifth time in their history, and the second in as many years. They had to work for their quarter-final berth, finishing 15th in the group stage, therefore going through the knockout phase play-offs. There they trumped fellow French side Brest 10-0 on aggregate. Group stage winners Liverpool were the last-16 opponents, with PSG coming from a first-leg deficit to eventually win on penalties. They’re now second-favourites to win the Champions League this season. It’s also worth noting that PSG have already secured the league title and were not in domestic action last weekend.
Leon Bailey missed the first leg through injury but Unai Emery is hopeful that he’ll be available for the game at Villa Park, although it’s highly unlikely he will start the game. The Villa boss made several changes for the trip to Southampton on Saturday, with all three of his substitutes scoring: Watkins, Malen & McGinn.
Marquinhos is back for PSG after missing the first leg through suspension, giving Luis Enrique a full squad. Lucas Beraldo is expected to drop out at the expense of the PSG captain.
The first leg was the first ever competitive meeting between these two sides.
