It took until deadline day but Manchester City have finally addressed the biggest need in their squad. Fabrizio Romano has reported that City have agreed a deal with FC Porto to sign midfielder Nico Gonzàlez. With that one move, all of a sudden, City’s midfield looks instantly better. Although it will take time for Gonzàlez to adjust to life at the Etihad he is a more than welcome addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Fabrizio Romano has reported on his official X account that Manchester City have agreed to pay €60 million to FC Porto to sign Nico Gonzàlez. Furthermore, Romano reports that City will pay the same amount as the release clause in the contract of Gonzàlez but with a different payment structure. Lastly, Romano adds that the Spanish midfielder is set to undergo his Manchester City medical imminently.
David Ornstein has reported for the Athletic that Nico Gonzàlez was undergoing his medical ahead of his move to Manchester City. Furthermore, Ornstein reports that City will pay £49.9 million to sign the talented midfielder. Gonzàlez is also set to sign a long-term contract with the world champions as per Ornstein’s report.
Nico Gonzàlez always loomed as Manchester City’s main deadline-day transfer target. Signing a midfielder was City’s biggest priority when the transfer window opened. It took the world champions a while to finally sign the midfielder they so desperately need. But although it took time it does appear that they landed the ideal player to bolster their midfield. Gonzàlez can contribute now and his potential midfield pairing with Rodri is a tantalising prospect.
Manchester City need legs in midfield. They have paid a price all season long since Rodri went down with a serious knee injury. Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva have soldiered on in Rodri’s absence. The issue is they lack the legs and athleticism to do the work that Pep Guardiola’s side needs in midfield. The imminent signing of Nico Gonzàlez does address this need. But that’s only part of the reason why City’s reported capture of the Spanish midfielder is an exciting one.
Rodri does appear poised to return to the pitch either late in the season or at the FIFA Club World Cup. Now Manchester City have the ideal midfielder to play alongside their midfield general. The game of Nico Gonzàlez does appear to complement Rodri’s. When Rodri is fit Pep Guardiola will now be able to employ two technically and tactically gifted midfielders. After watching his midfield struggle all season long that is a welcome boost to City’s prospects.
At long last Manchester City have finally signed the midfielder they so desperately needed. We now await official confirmation of the signing of Nico Gonzàlez but with the deal reportedly complete City’s midfield now looks a lot better than it did a month ago. That’s massive news for Pep Guardiola’s side for the remainder of this season and the future.
