Manuel Neuer is close to extending his contract at Bayern Munich until 2026. His current contract was set to expire in June 2025, but the club has decided to keep the veteran goalkeeper for one more season before he potentially retires.

The new contract for Bayern's skipper will not have the same financial terms as his current one. The club also expects Neuer to accept few other concessions, which although won’t be formally written down on the contract.

According to Christian Falk of SportBild (via @iMiaSanMia) , Neuer’s new fixed salary will be see a decrease from his current salary of around €20m/year, while the performance based bonuses will significantly increase. If he plays all games and also manages to have a successful season with the team, then the overall salary, inclusive of the bonuses, would reach €20m/year again.

The report also states that the club has asked the 38-year-old to sit out some games in the following season. This will allow the second choice keeper to get some game-time and further his development, as Bayern are also planning for the future of the goalkeeping position. This condition, however, is not written down in the contract and will only be informally agreed between the two parties.

Bayern remains on the lookout for a backup goalkeeper

While Bayern have faith in Neuer and want to avail his services for another season, they won’t overlook the importance and urgency of securing a long-term successor to the great goalkeeper. Daniel Peretz (24) has deputized for an inured Neuer on a few occasions this season, but the Israeli keeper is likely to depart the club on loan next season.

Alexander Nübel (28), currently at Stuttgart on a two-year loan deal, is also an option, but Bayern's confidence in him has waned recently. Therefore, the club is now exploring the goalkeeper market across Europe to secure a solid backup with the potential to become Die Roten's first-choice goalkeeper in the future.

Bart Verbruggen (22) of Brighton & Hove Albion and Zion Suzuki (22) of FC Parma are two young keepers that Bayern have been monitoring closely. Jonas Urbig of FC Köln is another candidate present on the club's list and is particularly highly rated by Sporting Director Max Eberl. The 21 year-old talented goalkeeper can be signed in the summer and allowed to develop under Manuel Neuer next season.
