Bompastor pleased to see Chelsea get off to a winning start against Real Madrid | OneFootball

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor said that she was pleased with her side’s 3-2 victory over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge last night, although the performance could have been better.

Sjoeke Nüsken, Guro Reiten and Mayra Ramírez got the goals for The Blues as they made a winning start in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage.

When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor said that the result was more pleasing than the performance.

“I’m happy with the result,” Bompastor said. “It’s always important to start [well], especially at home with three points against Real Madrid, a team who have the highest ranking after us in the group.

“I think if you reflect on the performance, I wish my team could have managed more of the game. When I say manage, it’s not about slowing down the game, but about being smarter.

“When you start the game and lead by two goals, I think it’s important to keep that result, especially because I thought we conceded two goals where we should have done better in those actions.”

Commenting on Real Madrid, Bompastor praised the Spaniards for pushing to get back into the game.

She said “Credit to Madrid, they were confident and really trying to push the game when trying to score. They have a good team.

“At the end, I felt a bit like [after] the Aston Villa game because I hoped we controlled more of the game. We were a bit nervous about Madrid getting back in it, so it’s something we need to work on, but I’m not too worried about that.”

It has been a period of change for Chelsea with Bompastor coming in as head coach and new players being added to the group. The Blues boss said that it takes time to build near-perfect performances and that winning is what matters at this stage.

She said “I think sometimes, you expect Chelsea to win every single game, but I need to realise it’s really good when we win and just need to enjoy it.

“As a Chelsea manager, when you work in an environment where there are a lot of ambitions, the most important thing is getting results. It takes time and sometimes, it’s a long process to make sure everyone is on the same page, especially in understanding the game model. When you look at it, in the squad, we have new people, new staff and different players coming from all over the world, so it’s just about trying to make sure everyone is on the same page.”

Chelsea return to Barclays Women’s Super League action this weekend when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal.
