Former Manchester United player Callum Gribbin reflected on his time at the club.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, the 25 year old spoke about how his United career went downhill, eventually leading to his release.

Touted as a “wonderkid,” the midfielder was fast-tracked through the youth system, sharing training grounds with football legends like Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, the fairy tale soon took an unexpected turn. Gribbin’s release from the club at age 20 in 2019 forced him to confront brutal realities about the football world and his development as a player.

Gribbin’s story began at United’s academy, where his talent shone early on.

By age five, he was already enrolled in their centre of excellence. Coaches quickly recognised his abilities, often placing him with older age groups.

His skills even caught Nike’s attention, and the media hailed him as the “English Messi.”

At 16, Gribbin was promoted to train with United’s senior squad, where he rubbed shoulders with some of the world’s best players.

However, despite his obvious potential, his first-team chances never materialised under the club’s management changes.

The arrival of José Mourinho, in particular, dampened his hopes, as the manager seemed less inclined to give academy players their chance in the spotlight. Gribbin’s frustration built up, ultimately contributing to what he calls “self-destructive behaviour.”

In 2019, Nicky Butt, then head of United’s academy, delivered the difficult news that the club would not be renewing Gribbin’s contract.

The message was clear: prove them wrong or risk fading into obscurity. For Gribbin, the release marked a turning point. He admits to mishandling certain situations during his time at the club, reflecting now on the importance of that lesson.

Now 25, Gribbin plays for FC United of Manchester in the Northern Premier League.

Despite setbacks—including a severe knee injury—he is determined to rebuild his career.

He acknowledges his past mistakes but remains hopeful that, with hard work and the right opportunities, he can once again rise through the ranks of English football.
