Chelsea travel to face Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this evening.
Tonight’s tie is the second meeting between the teams in four days, after Chelsea earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Newcastle in the Premier League at the weekend.
Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer were on target for the Blues, who continue to show good progress under Enzo Maresca. Newcastle, meanwhile, have stumbled following a strong start to the season. The Magpies have won just one of their last five across all competitions and have suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats.
Enzo Maresca confirmed his side have no new injuries and he is likely to delve into his deep squad once again, with wholesale changes for tonight’s Carabao Cup clash.
The Italian has rotated his options heavily during Chelsea’s Europa Conference League campaign and will ring the changes again in cup competition.
Filip Jorgensen is expected to replace Robert Sanchez in goal, while there could also be starts for Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo – who snubbed Newcastle to sign for Chelsea in the summer.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will want to make the most of a rare appearance having featured for just 44 minutes in the Premier League this season. There could also be a recall for Jadon Sancho, who Maresca said has been left out as a ‘tactical decision’ in recent games.
Christopher Nkunku will lead the line and the Frenchman will be aiming to continue his red-hot form. Nknuku has averaged a goal every 64.6 minutes for Chelsea this season and scored a hat-trick in the third-round win over Barrow.
Chelsea predicted XI: Jorgensen; Disasi, Badiashile, Adarabioyo, Cucurella; Fernandez, Dewsbury-Hall; Sancho, Felix, Mudryk; Nkunku
Newcastle host Chelsea in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round on Wednesday 30th October, 2024. Kick-off at St James’ Park is 19:45 GMT.
