The Liga MX Clausura kicked off this weekend, with 16 out of the 18 clubs in action. Pachuca and León watched on Monterrey hosted Puebla in response to their Apertura final loss to Club América as the reigning champions travelled to Querétaro.

Cruz Azul won the Apertura regular season but only made it to the semifinals, could they get off to a win in their temporary home of the Estadio Universitario against an Atlas side which had a change of managers over the off-season?

Club América started the Clausura with a narrow win against a Querétaro side which won just three games during the Apertura regular season. Newly-appointed Benjamín Mora was handed the short straw for the opening game but his men shot themselves in the foot when Franco Russo received two yellow cards in the space of five minutes to end the first half. André Jardine opted for an unfamiliar starting XI which repaid him on the hour mark when Antonio Alvárez scored his first professional goal.

Mazatlán and Juárez were two of the sides which missed out on Liguilla contention last season and had a point to prove on the opening matchday. Fighting to prove their post-season credentials, Dieter Villalpando gave the visitors the lead within the first twenty minutes but the Sinaloa side responded with four minutes left on the clock as Mauro Laínez made sure the points were shared at the Estadio El Encanto.

Renato Paiva stepped down as Toluca boss after quarterfinal disappointment in the Apertura, meaning that Antonio Mohamed would be making his debut in the dugout for Los Diablos Rojos. At the break in Tijuana, the spoils were shared as Alexis Vega got the new era underway before José Zuniga continued his rich vein of goalscoring form with seconds before the break for Los Xolos. The game came to life in the second as Vega scored a brace on the hour mark before Helio Junio doubled the visitor's lead. Emmanuel Reynoso pulled one back for the visitors but Paulinho put the nail in the coffin with five minutes left in the game.

San Luís and Tigres clashed in the Apertura quarterfinals, with the hosts reaching the semifinals for the second straight Apertura campaign. In a tightly fought first half, Diego Laínez opened the scoring for Tigres, but Sebastien Lamonge equalised for San Luís before the break. However, the home side's momentum took a hit when Yan Philipe received a straight red card deep into stoppage time, leaving Tigres with a numerical advantage. In the second half, Guido Pizarro restored the visitors' lead, and Fernando Gorriarán sealed the victory, securing maximum points for Veljko Paunović's team.

Los Rojiblancos welcomed Óscar García Junyent to the Estadio Akron this weekend for his managerial debut. In his first lineup, García handed starting opportunities to 19-year-old Jonathan Padilla and 17-year-old Hugo Camberos. After an uninspiring first half, Chivas were awarded a penalty early in the second, but Carlos Acevedo made a smart save to deny Roberto Alvarado. Twenty minutes later, Alvarado redeemed himself by scoring the opening goal of the García era. Santos, who finished bottom of the Apertura standings, replaced manager Ignacio Ambríz with former Monterrey head coach Fernando Ortíz. However, Ortíz's tenure began with a defeat in Guadalajara.

The final game of the night took place at Cruz Azul's temporary home, the Estadio Universitario, as La Maquiná aim for a third consecutive Liga MX title. Cruz Azul took the lead in the first half through an Ángel Sepúlveda penalty, but Uroš Djurdjević struck back to secure a surprising draw for new manager Gonzalo Pineda’s side in the capital.

Pumas announced the departure of César Huerta to Belgian side Anderlecht earlier this week but managed to kick off the season with a victory over Necaxa. Two quickfire goals from Jorge Ruvalcaba and Rodrigo López gave Pumas the ideal start, while Necaxa found a lifeline in the second half through Diber Cambindo. However, it proved to be merely a consolation, as new manager Nicolás Larcamón's debut ended in defeat with no points secured.

Monterrey returned to action after their Apertura final defeat to Club América, hosting Puebla at the Estadio BBVA this weekend. Martín Demichelis sought a strong response from his team, and they delivered early when Jorge Rodríguez put Los Rayados ahead before halftime. Monterrey appeared set for a routine victory, but with just four minutes remaining, Gustavo Ferrareis struck to earn Pablo Guede a surprising result in his debut as Puebla manager.
