For the majority of the Old Trafford faithful, the prospect of losing Bruno Fernandes when at complete rock bottom is unthinkable.

Yet, Manchester United might just be considering a potential sale of their invaluable skipper this summer as INEOS chiefs frantically ponder over how they can navigate the summer window in financial disarray.

Despite being one of the more senior members of the squad at 30 years old, Fernandes remains one of their most valuable assets, given he’s head and shoulders above the rest in regards to his ability and consistency.

He’s opened the door to a potential exit, too. In the aftermath of United’s Europa League final defeat, the Portuguese star acknowledged that sales will be essential for the side to comply with the Profit and Sustainability laws in the coming months.

“I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” said Fernandes to reporters post-match.

“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever. It is what it is. And football sometimes is like this.”

Fernandes’ uncertain future: The state of play

Last August, Fernandes put pen to paper on a contract extension to keep him tied to United until June 2027, plus the option of a further year. The deal saw his pay bumped up to accurately reflect his integral role at the club, whilst also fending off interest from potential suitors who’d established their interest.

Speculation around the time had suggested the midfielder was being approached by Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. United had just won the FA Cup but overseen a lacklustre Premier League campaign, which culminated with them finishing eighth and subsequently prompted reports that the captain was considering a new venture where he’d enjoy increased success.

Now that the Reds are on the cusp of recording their worst season in over 50 years, we can only question where his head’s at.

United will also have their own questioning to do as to whether they take Fernandes up on his suggestion of cashing in or go again next season with him at the heart of Ruben Amorim’s rebuild.

According to The Telegraph, Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal ‘could table a big offer’ for Fernandes, who’s scored 19 goals and contributed a further 19 assists in 56 appearances this term.
