Speaking at the 15th iteration of the Globe Soccer Awards, Cristiano Ronaldo (39) has taken aim at the standard of football in Ligue 1.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United player reportedly stated “[The] Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course. France only has Paris Saint-Germain. The rest are finished.” This is not the first time that the Portuguese international who now plys his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr has hit out at the French top flight.
Earlier in the year, Ronaldo voiced a similar statement at the 14th Globe Soccer Awards claiming that the Saudi Pro league is more competitive than Ligue 1. Ronaldo received criticism from managers in Ligue 1 including fellow countryman Paulo Fonseca, who at the time managed Lille OSC, and pointed out that the striker has never played in the league.
This season Ligue 1 is on course for an impressive year in the Champions League with three of the four French entrants on course to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League with Lille and Stade Brestois currently sat in the automatic qualifying spots.
