Nick Cushing praised his side’s character after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Leicester kept our UEFA Women’s Champions League hopes alive.

Jess Park’s 70th minute effort was the difference at the King Power Stadium, as City closed the gap on Manchester United to four points.

Leicester were unbeaten on home soil since November and proved a stubborn opponent, with the Blues dominating possession but struggling to break down the hosts before Park’s winner.

And while Cushing called for his side to be more clinical in front of goal, he was pleased to see us ultimately fulfil our prime objective of getting back to winning way.

"We spoke about finding a way and we have to execute better. Small things matter, but I’m proud we found a way today,” our Interim Head Coach said.

"Brighton was the same and Leicester, we’ve found a way to make sure we’re still mathematically in the Champions League run.

"I thought we played well in large parts. In the first half, we played with intensity, we dominated the ball and were in their box but have to be better at creating clearer opportunities.

"It’s tough when teams have eight, nine, ten bodies in the box, but it’s about three points and getting them is the most important thing."

The win sets up a blockbuster tie next Sunday at Old Trafford between Manchester United and City, who are battling it out for the third and final Champions League spot.

Just four points separate the sides and while our rivals have a game in hand, that fixture sees them face WSL leaders Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

Cushing didn’t shy away from the potential significance of that clash in the context of our season.

He added: "It’s massive. It’s a 50:50 game if Chelsea win on Wednesday.

"It’ll be tough, but we can make it possible by winning games. I was disappointed we didn’t get the three points against Everton, but it is what it is.

"We have to prepare for a difficult Manchester United game next week."
