Bayern Munich had a night to forget in Rotterdam on Wednesday as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against Feyenoord in the Champions League. It was a rare off day for Die Roten as they made mistakes at both ends of the pitch.
The performance against Feyenoord is an anomaly for Bayern’s defense this season. They have largely performed well across all competitions. In Vincent Kompany’s system, the center-backs have a lot of space to cover. Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae have formed a solid partnership in the heart of defense to give Bayern much-needed stability.
Upamecano has especially looked accomplished in and out of possession for Die Roten this season. The French defender is one of the first picks in Bayern’s strongest starting XI under Kompany.
Courtesy of the resurgence in form and development of the team under Kompany, Upamecano is ready to pledge his future to Bayern. While talking to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Upamecano expressed his desire to sign a new deal at Die Roten.
"I still have time. But I'm very happy. With the development, with our team, with the relationship with Vincent Kompany. I hope to continue."Dayot Upamecano
Upamecano has managed to turn around his situation at Bayern
The French international staying in Munich beyond last summer was far from certain at the end of last season. Upamecano had a difficult second half of last season when he was effectively fourth choice center-back. The French defender didn’t get adequate game time during the Ruckrunde.
Upamecano was reportedly ready to look for a new club in the summer, with the Premier League tipped to be the potential destination for him. However, the appointment of Vincent Kompany as the new head coach of Bayern completely changed the situation of Upamecano in Bavaria.
The Belgian coach rates Upamecano highly, and he quickly reinstated him back in the starting XI. Matthijs de Ligt left Bavaria to join Manchester United, while new arrival Hiroki Ito, has not made his competitive debut due to injuries. Upamecano grabbed the opportunity to cement his place in the starting XI with both hands.
Die Roten will certainly strengthen the defense in the summer, but Upamecano will not shy away from competition. He is entering the prime of his career, and it does look like the French international will soon become the leader of the defense.
Bayern should look to open contract talks with Upamecano during the second half of the season. His current deal expires in 2026. Since the French defender is keen on staying in Munich, contract negotiations can be straightforward. However, Die Roten cannot afford another player to enter the final year of their existing deal, which makes negotiations more complex.
