A win was all that Bayern needed to secure a 32nd Bundesliga title. In a game where star striker Harry Kane was on the sidelines due to yellow card accumulation, the Bavarian squad didn’t manage to mathematically secure another Bundesliga triumph. The battle was one to remember, featuring six goals, multiple lead changes, and a last minute equalizer. RB Leipzig’s 3-3 draw ensured that Bayern would not be lifting the Meisterschale inside the Red Bull Arena.
In a game which was important for Leipzig’s Champions League qualification hopes, the home side could not have asked for a better start. Dutchman Xavi Simons started a counter attack by playing a beautiful ball into the left channel for Benjamin Šeško to run into. The Slovenian then stole the show, using the outside of his right foot to fire the ball into the net from a long way away, giving Leipzig a one goal lead.
The lead would become two before the half time interval. With a free kick from just inside Bayerns half, David Raum played a beautiful lofted ball into the box. Lukas Klostermann then beat out multiple Bayern defenders and headed the ball past goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to give the home side a two goal advantage. Neither side would be able to change the score, and it remained 2-0 to Leipzig going into halftime With RB coming into the match only two points behind Freiburg for a Champions League spot, they looked to be in a very good position going into the half.
The second forty-five could not have been much different from the first. After being shut out in the first half, Bayern would start the next period on the front foot. Leipzig have not kept a clean sheet in their last six matches, and the streak today would become seven. Bayern’s first answer came off a corner quickly in the sixty-second minute. Michael Olise put in an enticing ball off a corner kick which was finished off by Eric Dier at the front post. Munich would find their equalizer less than a minute later with Olise getting his 15th goal of the season.
With Bayern needing a win for the title, there was still ground to cover for the away side. The all important goal would come in with just under ten minutes remaining. Joshua Kimmich flicked the ball elegantly over to Leroy Sané, who fired the ball past Maarten Vandevoordt, seemingly giving Bayern the Bundesliga title. The score would remain the same until almost the final kick of the game. Simons played a wonderful ball over to Yussef Poulsen, who chipped the ball over Urbig in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The result likely only pushes back the celebrations to another date. The only way Bayern could lose the title now would be if their goal difference is worse than that of Leverkusen, which seems very unlikely. Munich sit top of the table with a GD of +61, while Leverkusen remain nine points behind with a GD of only +31.
