Eddie Howe has reassured Newcastle United fans that star striker Alexander Isak is fit and ready for the League Cup final this weekend (via Sky Sports).
Isak missed Newcastle’s recent 2-0 league defeat to Liverpool due to a groin issue. He returned and scored in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, he couldn’t finish the game as tightness forced his withdrawal before extra time, and the Magpies exited the competition.
Isak started in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Monday night. His early substitution raised concerns about a possible setback.
Howe eased concerns about Isak and the rest of his squad after the West Ham game.
“We’re hopeful that we’ve got a clean bill of health,” Howe said. “I don’t think you ever quite know until the next day or two, but at the moment, I think we look okay.”
On Isak’s substitution, Howe clarified: “I didn’t take him off because of an injury. I took him off because I thought he was tiring. But no issues that I’m aware of.”
Newcastle must deliver their best to topple Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, and they need Isak leading the line.
The Swedish forward has been outstanding this season, bagging 22 goals and five assists in 32 appearances in all competitions.
If he produces his best on Sunday, he could be the key to Newcastle’s bid to win the League Cup.
