Chelsea are about to kick off against Brentford at the G-Tech stadium, and we’re frustrated to see that manager Enzo Maresca has done one thing we really hoped he wouldn’t for this match.

After our midweek win over Spurs, we pointed out how good Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah looked at centre back, and how important it was that we try to keep some consistency in the back line.

Injuries to Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Benoit Badiashile and others have made it very hard to get a consistent defence together.

When you combine that with the nightmare in goal, which saw Robert Sanchez dropped and then restored, it’s created no end of issues. We’ve seen so many different back 5 combinations this season, and that has been a big part of our defensive struggles.

So after Colwill and Chalobah looked good against Spurs, we were hopeful we would keep some consistency. Instead, Colwill has been removed for Tosin Adarabioyo – as far as we can tell, this is just rotation. It’s not only that, Reece James comes in at right back and Malo Gusto replaces Marc Cucurella at left back.

So far from keeping the same 4, Maresca has changed in 3 positions.

Chelsea will have to re-organise once again

Of course, score a couple of goals and this will all soon be forgotten. And Tosin’s game may suit this matchup better. But sometimes a consistent back line who have developed an understanding together is better than constantly chopping and changing to try and counteract the opposition.

There’s nothing that Maresca can do about the injuries or the bad form of his players, but what he certainly can do is pick a consistent team week to week when possible and not fiddle around with things.
