The Brazilian international will join the 12th-placed La Liga outfit for the remainder of the 2024/2025 campaign in hopes of revitalising his stagnant career. As there is no buy clause included in the agreement, he will then return to Old Trafford in the summer and presumably look to fight for a starting role when the 2025/2026 term gets underway.

Antony leaves without having made a Premier League start this season, being granted only two starts in total under Ruben Amorim. He was an unused substitute for five matches of the new head coach’s tenure and featured for just 108 minutes in the top flight.

Alas, it’s no surprise that United have been willing to facilitate his move elsewhere, but it has raised the eyebrows of supporters due to the lack of options Amorim will have in attack.

Why Amorim needs an instant Antony replacement

With Marcus Rashford poised to exit before the February 3 deadline and Alejandro Garnacho being heavily pursued by Napoli, Amorim is set to be left considerably short on forwards from now until May.

That’s why, according to Relevo, the Portuguese tactician demanded that he be granted a new signing to reinforce his frontline before giving his green light to Antony’s loan.

It remains to be seen where INEOS will turn their attention to try and scout a suitable attacker, as most of the club’s links this month have been regarding left-backs and wing-backs. The lack of funds available also means that any additions are likely to be on a temporary basis.
