With Milan Skriniar on loan at Fenerbahce and likely nearing his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, the club may be on the lookout for a new center-back this summer. Although his move isn’t permanent yet, it appears PSG is preparing to part ways with Skriniar for good, making a replacement likely.

In February, Anfield Watch reported PSG’s serious interest in Ibrahima Konate, adding an interesting twist to the situation, especially as uncertainty surrounds the defender’s future.

A Paris native, Konate is a major target for PSG, who are reportedly eager to bring him back home. He came through the youth ranks at Paris FC before moving to RB Leipzig and is now firmly on PSG’s radar.

Liverpool announced Mohamed Salah’s contract extension, and Virgil van Dijk is expected to sign his extension to stay at Anfield. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided the latest regarding Ibrahima Konate’s contract, as his deal is set to expire in 2026 (h/t TEAMtalk).

“They are. At some point, Liverpool were quite close to reaching an agreement with Ibrahima Konate, then there was still some work to do on the details of his contract. But the conversation, from what I’m hearing, is still ongoing with his agents.”

“Liverpool, obviously, this year had to focus on Van Dijk, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Mo Salah, so it’s obvious that for a player like Ibrahima Konate, who’s a really important player for the club, but still with a contract.”

“So, not an urgent situation, Liverpool gave priority to the leaders they have in the dressing room. But Ibrahima Konate is a player they really appreciate and a player they love. They want to continue with him, they remain in conversation with him, and so Liverpool maintain their intention to extend his contract.”

“Of course, it’s a financial topic too. There are more clubs following the situation, so let’s see what happens there, but Liverpool maintain their confidence and remain in conversation with Ibrahima Konate over a new deal.”

On the other hand, if Liverpool and Konate can’t agree on a new contract, the club might consider selling him to fund improvements to their attack.

Hamzah Khalique-Loonat of The Times reported that Konate’s agent has caught Liverpool’s owners, FSG, off guard by requesting a 150% pay rise, pushing his weekly wages to £200,000. If granted, that would make him Liverpool’s third-highest earner, behind only Mohamed Salah (£350,000) and Virgil van Dijk (£220,000).

With a significant gap between Konate’s demands and what Liverpool is willing to offer, negotiations have hit a standstill as both sides try to find common ground. Meanwhile, Real Madrid and PSG have been closely monitoring Konate, increasing the pressure on the situation.
