Chelsea are still giving time to Josh Acheampong to decide on whether he wants to sign a new contract with the club according to Fabrizio Romano.

Acheampong is currently under contract until 2026 at Stamford Bridge, and was recently linked with a surprise move to Real Madrid.

The teenager has only made two appearances for the first team and featured in the Carabao Cup tie against Barrow last month.

Chelsea giving Acheampong time

Acheampong is highly regarded at Chelsea but in a sudden turn of events it was reported that he wouldn’t play for the first team or the U21s until he signed a new contract.

Maresca commented on the situation in the build-up to the Panathinaikos game, a match Acheampong would likely have featured in and described it as bad.

It’s a hard stance Chelsea have taken given the 18-year-old only recently signed a new deal, but it’s another indication the Blues don’t want players going into the final 12 months of their contracts.

Acheampong is highly rated by Chelsea.

Quite why it all needed to be so public is unclear and Chelsea certainly weaken their bargaining power if they look to sell and Acheampong’s value will drop as clubs would know that he wants to leave.

The Blues are still hopeful he will sign a new deal and Romano has now provided an update on the situation.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea are still giving time to Josh Acheampong to decide on his contract but want solution as soon as possible. Contract proposal remains available on table. Understand Acheampong’s family is active and involved in this negotiation, up to player side.”

It’s a decision Acheampong won’t want to rush into it and he will need to evaluate how clear the pathway is to first team minutes at Chelsea.

Given he’s a right back it’s difficult to see how he would displace Reece James and Malo Gusto on a regular basis, but with James’ well documented fitness issues there would be opportunities for him, although the pathway at other clubs will likely be clearer and Acheampong needs to weigh that up in his thinking.
