Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne could now receive fresh transfer interest from Turkey as his existing Etihad Stadium contract continues to wind down.
The Belgium international has endured a troublesome campaign thus far, battling an injury and illness that has seen his opportunities to aid Manchester City’s season significantly reduced.
His latest issues come off the back of a difficult 2023/24 season, despite a hugely productive second-half to the campaign. De Bruyne recovered from hamstring surgery to play an integral role from January onwards and drive the club towards a fourth successive Premier League title.
However, despite the obvious quality that the 33-year-old has at his disposal, and in many ways abilities that are unable to be replicated by any other player within Pep Guardiola’s squad, Manchester City are yet to discuss a renewed contract for the midfielder.
And that position comes with just six months remaining on De Bruyne’s existing deal, and a freedom for the player to be contacted by potential suitors from across the game with the arrival of the January transfer window now upon us.
According to the information of The Times’ Paul Hirst, Kevin De Bruyne would be due to recoup a loyalty bonus in excess of £3.5 million if he stays until the end of his current Manchester City contract, which expires on June 30.
Despite concerns from supporters that an exit may be near, the report claims that City have not ruled out giving the Belgian a new one-year deal, but he must prove his fitness otherwise he will leave in the upcoming summer transfer window.
In the event of an exit from the club, it is suggested that the most likely next destination for the 33-year-old would be to Saudi Arabia or the United States’ Major League Soccer, despite Fenerbahce being prepared to offer a contract worth at least £250,000 a week after tax.
Unsurprisingly, it is pointed out that such an offer from the Turkish giants would be dwarfed by a financial package put on the table by a club from Saudi Arabia, with a contract expected to be worth more than double the aforementioned amount.
For now, there is a clear feeling of calm between Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester City, and the midfielder himself has issued no updates on his future, insisting that talks between the two parties will simply come in time.
Speaking during his latest opportunity to conduct a press conference with the media at the end of November, De Bruyne said of his contractual position, “Questions will come, but I can only give the answers I’m giving you now because there’s nothing really more to talk about.
He continued, “Talks will come, if no talks come then it’s my last year. So I don’t know, I’m trying to be honest. People can say or write about it, I can’t affect that, I just want to play good football and we’ll see what the future holds.”
