Flick’s two alternatives in Barcelona midfield with Marc Casado’s season likely over

Barcelona’s dramatic comeback at the Metropolitano seemed to set up a perfect international break – a crucial win over one of their direct title rivals, giving them the perfect chance to open up a lead at the top with a game still in hand.
However, it came with a cost as Barça lost two players to injuries on the night – Inigo Martinez and Marc Casado.
While the defender’s condition is not as concerning, Casado has suffered a torn ligament in his knee and is set to miss at least two months, meaning his season is pretty much over.
The 21-year-old midfielder’s absence forces Hansi Flick to reshuffle his midfield hierarchy. Although Frenkie de Jong had already cemented himself as the first-choice starter, Casado was his primary backup alongside Pedri.
With Casado unavailable and Pau Prim not in contention, De Jong’s importance grows even further. He is expected to start the big matches, but given Barça’s demanding schedule, he will need rest. That leaves Flick searching for solutions in the defensive midfield role.

Eric Garcia emerges as the most likely option. Having nearly left in January, he remained after Flick convinced him to stay, following an impressive cameo in the Champions League clash in Benfica.
Flick values his versatility, and he even played minutes as a pivot at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. With Casado out, Garcia is expected to take on a more significant role, particularly in matches where Barcelona dominate possession against deep-lying defences.
Another possibility is Gavi, who was set to play in a double pivot against Osasuna before that match was postponed.
The Andalusian brings a different skill set compared to Garcia – more intensity in duels and pressing, making him a better fit for high-energy matches with frequent transitions.
Gavi’s playing time has been limited in recent weeks, but Casado’s injury and the packed schedule offer him a chance to reclaim minutes.
