Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United’s results will improve based on their recent performances and slammed the decision to award West Ham a late penalty in his side’s 2-1 defeat.

Crysensio Summerville gave West Ham the lead in the second half before Casemiro’s equaliser but referee David Coote opted to award the Hammers a late penalty following a long VAR check for a foul on Danny Ings from Mathjis de Ligt.

And ten Hag was left furious with the decision for VAR to get involved.

“Football is not always the best team that wins,” he said.

“Today, that was clear and obvious. Clear and obvious wasn’t how VAR worked.

“Before the season, they explained the process of the VAR, only when it’s clear and obvious should they interfere. It shouldn’t have done it against Spurs, to interfere for the red card for Bruno.

“That was a wrong decision and now they make one again. The wrong decision, interfering, and both have a big impact on the scores of the games.”

Man Utd spurned several big opportunities to score in the first half, including through Diogo Dalot who missed an open goal, while Alejandro Garnacho also missed two big chances after being played in by Bruno Fernandes.

“The other impact was that we didn’t score (enough),” ten Hag added.

“We created so many chances, we played such good football especially in the first half. It’s exactly how I want my team to play, so dominant in and out of possession, very good build-up, very good structures, played between the lines, create chances.

“There were six or seven 100% chances we should have scored and that is the other thing.

“Definitely luck is not on my side. It’s not about me, it’s about the team and it’s not on our side. But last season was not different but in the end we turned this around and we are so determined that we have to turn this around, and it will turn around if we keep playing like we are playing now.

“Against Brentford, Fenerbahce, today, we played really good football.”
