Genoa have sacked their manager Alberto Gilardino after a disastrous start to the season which has seen them fall to 17th in the league, and Patrick Vieira has taken over.

Genoa finished 11th in the Serie A last season, a very successful campaign after only being promoted from Serie B the year before.

They have only won one game since August and therefore after just under two years at the club, the owners felt it was time for a move away from Gilardino.

Vieira comes in with a good amount of experience but has had a mixed time in his managerial career so far. He had relative success at Crystal Palace before a move to the controversial, Todd Boehly-owned Strasbourg, where he struggled and only lasted a year.

One of his biggest strengths though is that he has not been afraid to go around the world to better himself as a coach. He has had a range of different roles with the Manchester City youth team, New York City FC, Nice, Palace and Strasbourg. His willingness to build himself as a manager despite having such an esteemed playing career is admirable, and at 48 years old he still has a long career ahead of him.

Vieira’s first three games as manager will be against Cagliari, Udinese and Torino before the fixtures ramp up and his side have to face AC Milan and Napoli back-to-back before Christmas.
