Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin has been studying Bayern Munich’s approach to Celtic as he prepares his side for their trip to Parkhead this weekend. With Celtic balancing their Champions League campaign, Goodwin hopes to take lessons from Bayern’s tactics to give his team an edge.

Studying Bayern’s approach

Goodwin admitted he closely analysed Bayern’s 2-1 win over Celtic, looking for ways to disrupt Brendan Rodgers’ side with their away league against Bayern Munich looming.

““I thought they (Celtic) did great to stay in the game because Bayern are a really good side. obviously. It was an interesting game, you can learn a lot from how other teams, top teams like that play against Celtic and how they try and stop them. We’ve analysed that this morning after training today, so you can always take ideas from games like that. Celtic are still in the tie, so it’ll be interesting to see what their selection looks like at the beginning” he said.

Celtic’s focus won’t waver

While some might expect Celtic to have one eye on next week’s trip to Munich, Goodwin knows Rodgers will keep his side fully focused on their league fixture with Dundee United.

“When you’re at a club like Celtic you play a lot of games because you’re involved in every competition domestically, more often than not going far in each competition and obviously now in the Champions League they’re doing great to get to this stage and to be still in the tie after one game, credit to them.”

United’s gameplan

United have already taken points off Celtic at Tannadice this season and pushed them close at Parkhead. Goodwin further insists that their approach will not change much.

Last time out at Parkhead

“Last time out at Parkhead we were very much in the game. You know what you’re going to get when you go to Parkhead. I’d love to think that we would be able to do to Celtic what Bayern Munich did to them last night in the first half but I don’t think that’s realistic. You would expect Celtic to have 70% of the ball. What we do without the ball is really important in terms of our discipline and shape.”

Goodwin acknowledged his side’s position against the champions but remained optimistic, stating, “We know that we are going to be underdogs going into it, but we have to believe that we are capable of causing an upset, and that’s certainly the mindset within the group.”

With 13 league games remaining, Celtic sit nine points clear of Rangers and have the return leg against Bayern Munich looming on Tuesday night. A strong performance against Dundee United this weekend will not only boost confidence ahead of their European challenge but also edge them closer to securing their 55th league title and become the first Scottish club to reach that ‘landmark’ number.
