NJ/NY Gotham FC has had a crazy offseason, with numerous departures from the club. The team has now begun their preseason in Spain, with 23 players starting the preparations for 2025. Juan Carlos Amorós will utilize this time to see who will be the starters, with some spots up for grabs. This will also be a time for the rookies to show the head coach they can contribute in their first professional seasons.
Meanwhile, there is some news to cover regarding some former players. Without further ado, here is the most recent Gotham FC news roundup.
There were quite a few shocking departures, but one of the shocking trades of the offseason was Yazmeen Ryan. The winger was traded to the Houston Dash after she requested to be traded. The reason why was unknown, but supporters were sad to see her go.
Now, Houston announced that Ryan has signed a contract extension, keeping her with the Texas club through 2027. It is possible with some of the stars at Gotham she could not have gotten the contract she wanted, but could do so at the Dash. Nevertheless, supporters of the NJ/NY team can only wish that Ryan would have stayed and signed an extension with the Bats.
After leaving Gotham FC, Crystal Dunn has gone overseas. The versatile player has signed with Paris Saint-Germain in France. She joins the club with a contract through June 2027.
In some ways, this move makes sense since her husband is French and they can probably be closer to his side of the family. Interestingly, she is quoted on PSG's Instagram as saying the following: "My family supports me and comes with me, it was important for me to find a club that trusts me as a player but also accepts me to come with my family." It can make one wonder whether that was part of why Dunn left Gotham. Perhaps the Bats were not going to welcome back her husband, Pierre Soubrier, who was a consultant for the club.
If that was the case, then that could have aided in the move. Alas, nobody outside of Dunn and the club knows the truth.
Michelle Betos has retired as a player, but the former Gotham FC goalkeeper is staying with the club! On Saturday, the team announced that she is joining the "coaching staff as an assistant goalkeepers coach."
Per gothamfc.com, "Betos will work closely with Gotham FC’s current goalkeepers staff, bringing her wealth of experience and in-depth understanding of the game to the development of the club’s future goalkeepers. Additionally, she will be playing a role in the culture and mental performance side of the club."
This is great news for Betos since she gets to start her coaching career with the last team she was with. Plus, despite the new players, she is familiar with most of the team, which should help her transition to the coaching side. It will be interesting to watch her grow as a coach and see what she does for Gotham FC.
