Match preview ahead of the game at home to FC St. Pauli

Werder head coach Ole Werner is expecting a “great atmosphere” when his side take on FC St. Pauli on Sunday at the Weserstadion (kick-off 17:30 CEST). The Green-Whites have won each of their previous four matches and Werner sees defensive stability and efficiency in front of goal as key against the third best back line in the division if his team are to extend their successful streak. Ole Werner on the clash with FC St. Pauli: “We already experienced the atmosphere which can develop when these two teams face off in the reverse fixture. St. Pauli don’t give a lot away as a team. They operate in a disciplined fashion and as a compact unit. Their thinking is always clear and they are tricky to get the better of as a result. Therefore, it is essential that we take our chances and demonstrate the same effectiveness as we did in the reverse fixture, while also giving away as little as possible at the other end.”

Team news: Ole Werner can once again call upon nearly his entire squad. While Derrick Köhn is available again following a bruised ankle, Milos Veljkovic remains absent due to calf problems.

Hard to beat: Both SVW and their upcoming opponents from Hamburg have been unpleasant opposition in recent weeks. Each of these northern clubs has only lost once over the course of their last six Bundesliga fixtures. However, while Werder won all five other matches during this timeframe, picking up 15 points in the process, St. Pauli collected nine (W2, D3). That has put them in a position to secure their top-flight status with games to spare this weekend. The only side capable of defeating the Kiezkicker in any of their last six games was FC Bayern München (3-2).
