Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers was made even more frustrating because of the red card shown to captain Bruno Fernandes early in the second half.

Fernandes was shown his second yellow card just two minutes after the interval and made the long walk down the tunnel for the third time this season, having previously been dismissed against Tottenham Hotspur and Porto.

Crucially, that first red card against Tottenham was rescinded after United appealed the decision, so it does not count against Fernandes' disciplinary record.

Because this sending off against Wolves was Fernandes' first official red card in the Premier League this year, he will only serve a one-game suspension, rather than the two-game ban that would follow a second red card.

It means Fernandes will have to watch on from the sidelines as United face high-flying Newcastle United on Monday 30 December, with the Magpies looking to keep up their chase for a spot in the top four.

Fernandes is not the only United star who will be suspended for that game as head coach Ruben Amorim will also be without Manuel Ugarte, who was shown a fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves and must now serve a one-game ban of his own.

With Mason Mount also out injured, Amorim has limited midfield options and is likely to turn to Casemiro to partner Kobbie Mainoo against Newcastle. Christian Eriksen and 20-year-old Toby Collyer are the only other natural midfielders in Amorim's squad.
