Ronnie Edwards is likely to leave Southampton in January, having rarely featured for the Saints in the early months of the season.

Signed for £3 million in the summer, the young defender has struggled to have the desired impact at St Mary's and, according to The Star, Edwards is a potential option for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have been good going forward this term but have struggled at the back. This shortcoming has seen Danny Rohl's side enquire about the centre-back, who made 142 appearances across four years at Peterborough United.

Expected to be made available on loan, his signature won't come easy for Rohl with a whole host of Championship clubs said to be interested.

Whether the Owls will need to contribute to his weekly wages remains uncertain, but given Southampton's precarious position near the foot of the Premier League and their financial constraints, it’s likely they will request a contribution towards his salary.

With this in mind, at Football League World we have decided to take an outlook on his current financial package at St Mary's ahead of a potential move to Yorkshire.

Ronnie Edwards' current wage

Signed from Posh in the summer, his wage at the League One club stood at £2,308 a week, which saw him net £120,000 over an annual period.

Since moving to the south coast, Edwards' earnings have skyrocketed, with his salary rising by an impressive 549.9% compared to his previous wage. He now earns a substantial £15,000 per week, which translates to £780,000 over the course of a season.

Signing a four-year deal in July, this weekly figure would take his contractual salary to £3,120,000.

In comparison to his fellow Saints players, the defender earns very little with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Jan Bednarek on £120,000 and £70,000 per week respectively.

In contrast, players earning a similar amount to Edwards are typically around the same age, such as Nathan Wood and Samuel Edozie, who are also reported to take home the same weekly salary as the 21-year-old.

Sheffield Wednesday's wage bill of £15,446,000 sees them feature in the top 10 clubs in the Championship.

Looking across the squad, a number of players earn more than Edwards, meaning that his salary should simply fit into their structure if they were to pay the full percentage.

Currently, the highest-paid player at the club is Owls legend Barry Bannan, who takes home a significant £24,308 per week. Meanwhile, other key figures such as Ike Ugbo, Dominic Iorfa, and Nathaniel Chalobah each earn £20,000 weekly.

At present, the only player sitting on £15,000 a week is Josh Windass, who re-signed for Wednesday after speculation that he would depart the club.

These figures would suggest a temporary deal for Edwards makes sense as his current wage would only see him sit mid-table in their current financial structure.

Therefore, they should be chasing a move for the youngster, who could be a great addition to help Danny Rohl tighten up his defence.
