Smashing lower-league minnows proves nothing

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City were handed easy home ties in the third round of the FA Cup and had no trouble seeing off their lower-league opponents yesterday.

Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and Salford City were no match for the Premier League big guns, with a 17-0 combined scoreline reflecting the superiority.

However, some of the television coverage was hugely embarrassing, particularly for the Liverpool vs Accrington tie at Anfield.

Hyperbole often runs rife whenever Trent Alexander-Arnold is playing, and ITV’s commentary team repeatedly laid it on thick.

‘He can do things that other players can’t do’ was one of a plethora of over-the-top platitudes used to describe the Liverpool full-back.

Defending properly against decent teams is one of the things Alexander-Arnold can’t do, yet the commentary team were desperate to blow smoke up his backside.

Scoring against a struggling League Two team proves little in the grand scheme of things and certainly didn’t warrant the outpouring of ‘he’s world-class’ nonsense on ITV.

The mute button thankfully saved the day afterwards.

What to watch

Arsenal versus Manchester United. Two clubs who desperately need to win silverware this season. This should be a cracking FA Cup tie.
