Midfielder Nicolo Barella admits that he didn’t feel he was “giving enough” to Inter Milan at the start of last season.

The 27-year-old spoke to Italian journalist Mario Caccia on his YouTube channel.

Barella certainly played his part as Inter won the Serie A title last season.

The Italian international was a key player in the Nerazzurri’s starting eleven all throughout the campaign.

And Barella did deliver numerous outstanding performances for Inter over the course of the season.

But one thing that Barella did not provide all that much of was goals.

The former Cagliari midfielder did score two goals and assist a further three. That is hardly a paltry total.

However, this was not prolific by Barella’s standards.

The Italian international had been scoring on a more and more regular basis prior to last season.

Particularly at the start of the season when Barella was not able to get his first goal of the season, a few questions started to appear.

Barella spoke about a time he felt “alone” as a player.

“It happened the season we won the title,” he admitted. “When everyone was criticizing me at the start of the season.”

“They were saying I wasn’t the usual Barella,” the midfielder said.

“There was a period where I wasn’t performing at my best due to personal reasons,” Barella continued.

“I didn’t have a great passion for football. It was just work to me.”

“I’ve never really spoken about these things, because I have a wife I can talk to about everything,” Barella said. “And I spoke with teammates and friends.”

“They did something important by telling me to get over that moment,” he said.

Barella went on, “I was strong.”

“Then finally my goal came, against Napoli. And from then on I started playing better.”

“I didn’t feel alone,” Barella said. “I felt like I was helping my teammates.”

The 27-year-old said that “I didn’t feel useless, but I wasn’t giving what I could.”

“My teammates always gave me good feelings. And now I know what to do if it happens to someone else.”
