Inter Milan will only sign Lille and Canada striker Jonathan David on a free transfer if a big name leaves next summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. They report that Marcus Thuram would be the likeliest candidate to depart.

Inter have reportedly been laying the groundwork to potentially sign David next summer.

The 24-year-old’s contract with Lille expires at the end of next June.

Therefore, David should be available as a free transfer at the end of this season.

And big name free transfer signings have become something of a specialty for Inter in recent years.

That is the route via which all of Stefan de Vrij, Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, and Marcus Thuram have arrived at the Nerazzurri.

This summer alone, Inter signed both Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi on free transfers.

Therefore, it is not too much of a surprise to see Inter keeping tabs on David’s situation.

The big question surrounding Inter’s interest in David would be whether the Nerazzurri would look to sign the Canadian as a replacement for a big name striker – or to have in the squad alongside them.

Joaquin Correa and Marko Arnautovic are all but certain to leave Inter when their contracts expire at the end of next June.

Therefore, there would theoretically be space in Inter’s squad for David as another forward.

The Canadian could take his place alongside Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, and Mehdi Taremi.

That would certainly constitute a formidable array of attacking depth for Inter.

But according to Tuttosport, such a move is not likely to happen.

The problem would be that there would almost be too much attacking depth in that case.

It would be difficult for Inter to guarantee David regular playing time as a starter in that case.

Therefore, the 24-year-old would almost certainly reject a move to the Nerazzurri in that case.

On the other hand, if Inter were to sell a big name forward, then they would very much be ready to make a move for David.

And according to Tuttosport, the prime candidate to leave would be Thuram.

The Frenchman arrived at Inter on a free transfer last summer. But there is still plenty of transfer interest in him considering his fine form since making the move.

Inter could very well cash in on Thuram for a massive profit if the right offer were to arrive.
