Lautaro Martinez halted a four-game goal duck in Serie A to inspire Inter to a scrappy 1-0 home victory against bottom-half Genoa. The Argentine center-forward headed home Hakan Calhanoglu’s cross in the 78th minute to fire Simone Inzaghi’s charges to the top of the table.
However, Napoli can regain their place at the summit if they win at Como in the early afternoon. Nonetheless, it was a significant triumph for Inter following a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat in last weekend’s Derby d’Italia clash against Juventus.
El Toro was far from satisfied with the outcome at the Allianz Stadium and was even accused of blasphemy. But the 27-year-old played down those malicious talks.
“What was said about me was very hurtful. I never blaspheme. I try to pass that message on to my children too. I know the kind of person and father that I am, so my conscience is clear,” the Inter skipper told DAZN via FCInterNews.
Furthermore, Martinez reassured Inter fans of this team’s unity and commitment.
“We knew that we were coming off a defeat that hurt us a great deal. We understand the fans, we concentrate on our work and talk amongst ourselves, the important thing is that the squad remains united and gives its all for Inter,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
Inter will return to Serie A action in early March for a potentially season-defining away clash against Napoli. But before that, they’ll look to navigate a heavyweight Coppa Italia quarter-final tie against Lazio.
