Italy will have to face either Germany, Spain or Portugal in the Nations League quarter-finals after losing 3-1 to France in San Siro on Sunday evening and finishing the group stage in second as a result.
The Azzurri were the leaders of the Nations League Group A2 heading into the France match and would have qualified with a win, draw, or even a one-goal defeat.
Adrien Rabiot of France scores his France’s third goal during the UEFA Nations League win over the Azzurri in San Siro.
The 3-1 scoreline, however, flipped the standings in France’s favour, which means Luciano Spalletti and his team now face a slightly tougher test in the Nations League knock-out rounds.
After finishing second in the group, Italy will be in pot 2 in the quarter-final draw, which will take place around 11.00 GMT on Friday. They will have to face one of the other group winners: Germany, Spain or Portugal.
Had Italy finished the night as winners of Group A2, they would have instead faced either the Netherlands, Croatia, Scotland or Poland, Denmark or Serbia in the quarters instead.
