Despite being tied down for another year, Josh Windass' long-term future at Sheffield Wednesday remains uncertain.
Speaking to Football League World, Owls Fan Pundit Patrick McKenna was asked as to whether he believes that anyone is preparing for a summer move away from Wednesday, and believes that the forward’s recent social media activity suggests Windass is a player already eyeing the exit.
Windass, who saw a one-year extension in his contract triggered by the club, has made no secret of his mixed feelings toward staying at Hillsborough, at least according to Patrick.
“I think that would be Josh Windass,” he said when asked who might be unsettled at the club. “He has been hinting a bit in public on social media with his dad that he does want a move away.”
One particular moment raised eyebrows among supporters: “Even when he did get a new contract, he again put a post on social media joking about being held hostage at the club,” Patrick noted.
Windass has previously been linked with a variety of destinations, including clubs in MLS and even a sensational switch to Brazilian giants Santos after a story broke in January. While nothing materialised at the time, the suggestion is that there’s a willingness to explore opportunities beyond Hillsborough.
“Whether there is a lot of truth in those rumours or whether it’s his agent putting him in the shop window, it’s indicating to other clubs that he is desiring a move away,” Patrick added.
With the summer transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether any serious suitors will test Wednesday’s resolve.
Having made 182 appearances for the club since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2020, Windass has been a key player for Wednesday and has remained a fan favourite for many, but his off-pitch messaging continues to cause debate.
Patrick summed up the situation plainly: “I do think if a bid comes in for him in the summer, then he would be keen to leave.”
While Sheffield Wednesday have exercised their option to retain Windass, the coming weeks could define whether the forward truly sees his future at Hillsborough or if his next post will be a farewell.
