Chelsea signed Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham last summer and journalist Kieran Gill has revealed one of the reasons he was signed.

The Blues lost Thiago Silva at the end of last season with the Brazilian veteran returning to his homeland, and Chelsea replaced him in the squad with Tosin.

The 27-year-old was very much an opportunistic signing for the Blues given there was no transfer fee, and he has a wealth of Premier League experience.

One of the reasons Chelsea signed Tosin revealed

Tosin was signed to be a squad player and to compete with the likes of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, and put pressure on first choice defensive pairing Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.

The former Fulham man has settled in well and has been given the nickname “uncle” by his team-mates , whilst Maresca has praised him for his leadership capabilities.

Tosin has featured more regularly than perhaps expected, making ten Premier League appearances with seven coming as starts, whilst he’s also featured in four of Chelsea’s six Conference League games.

Chelsea have struggled at set pieces both defensively and offensively, with the club appointing Bernardo Cueva as their new set piece coach.

The Blues lack physical presence in both boxes and Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill has reported one of the reasons Tosin was signed was because of his height , with the defender standing at 6ft 5in and Chelsea considered that an asset from set pieces.

Tosin was linked with a move to Brighton earlier this month, and he’s recently slipped behind Josh Acheampong in the pecking order in the last two league matches.

Levi Colwill missed training on Friday meaning he could be a doubt for Wolves on Monday night, which could hand Tosin an opportunity to start.

However, with Trevoh Chalobah recalled due to injuries to Fofana and Badiashile, Tosin has found himself with another player to compete with for minutes.
