Kevin De Bruyne considers next step with Premier League clubs circling

As Manchester City’s imperious playmaker prepares for his final bow, Kevin De Bruyne has admitted he could stay in the Premier League after his departure from the Etihad this summer. With 16 trophies, 71 goals and 119 assists in 282 Premier League appearances, the Belgian’s legacy at Man City is already carved in gold. Yet the next chapter remains unwritten.
De Bruyne, who turns 34 in June, will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season. His elegant dismantling of Crystal Palace in City’s 5-2 win – scoring a sublime free-kick and assisting Mateo Kovacic – served as a reminder that class, once acquired, does not fade with time. Despite recent injury issues, his vision and execution remain elite.
Speaking to Viaplay Football, De Bruyne was refreshingly honest when asked about his future:
“There is always a challenge, you know. I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. If teams come and then convince me that they have a nice sport project. I know I am obviously not the youngest anymore.”
“I still think I am able to perform on the highest level. I don’t know what teams are interested or what they want to do. Whatever project [is] available – I am willing to listen. I love football, I love to play football and if a nice project comes and my family is also good with that, we will be able to make a decision.”
Those words will alert not just American and Saudi Arabian clubs – both reportedly circling – but also domestic rivals who sense an opportunity. With De Bruyne commanding wages that could rise to £400,000 per week in the Saudi Pro League, the decision may ultimately hinge more on his family’s preferences than financial packages.
The idea of seeing De Bruyne in another Premier League shirt feels near sacrilegious for City fans. Yet the door is ajar.
“I don’t know. Honestly I don’t know,” he said when asked if his time in England was over. “The decision to leave has not been long. Nothing can be decided in one week in the football world. I haven’t seen my family since the decision. I have to speak to them and then I will see whichever team wants me. So I don’t know. I have no idea.”
David Beckham’s Inter Miami have made no secret of their admiration for De Bruyne. With Florida offering an attractive lifestyle and less intense spotlight, MLS could be a soft landing. Yet, if the right “project” appears closer to home, do not discount the possibility of one last domestic twist.
For now, though, his full concentration is with Pep Guardiola’s side, who are battling for Champions League qualification in a fiercely contested Premier League run-in.
“I’ve been feeling good for the last six weeks, so I’m really happy,” De Bruyne added. “I feel fit and ready to go. I just want to play the football I can play. My job is to play good football and help this team win games.”
He will leave City with respect, admiration and a trophy cabinet that tells a story of dominance. But there’s still time for one more orchestral performance in sky blue before the curtain falls.
