Sam Byram impressed in Leeds United's win over Bristol City last weekend, and looks set to be involved from the off vs Plymouth on Saturday.

Sam Byram impressed on his first Championship start of the season vs Bristol City, and could give Whites boss Daniel Farke a selection headache moving forward with another strong showing against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The 31-year-old came into the side at left-back to replace the suspended Junior Firpo at Ashton Gate last weekend, and his performance drew rave reviews from supporters and critics alike.

Byram was named in the Championship Team of the Week for matchday 12 of the 2024/25 season, and once again proved himself to be a valuable piece of squad depth in Farke's side.

Now thanks to another suspension in the Leeds ranks, the experienced defender looks set to make back-to-back starts when the Whites welcome Plymouth Argyle to Elland Road on Saturday, and another similar showing will surely provide Farke with a real selection dilemma moving forward.

Byram was excellent vs Bristol City

As a backup player, when you're presented with an opportunity to force your way into the manager's thinking, it's crucial that you take it. That's precisely what Byram did at Ashton Gate.

Despite Leeds being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw, Byram almost unlocked the door for the Whites with a brilliant cross to the back post with 33 minutes played, which could only be headed into the side netting by Bogle.

A clever piece of movement saw him find the ball in space inside the Bristol City penalty area on 70 minutes, before picking out a well-placed cross that was met by the head of Matteo Joseph on the near post, but the young striker couldn't keep his effort on target.

He also played a crucial role in defense too, making some important interventions and keeping tricky Robins forward Yu Hirakawa largely quiet.

Jayden Bogle suspension paves way for another Byram start

With Firpo having served his one-match suspension against Bristol, he is fully expected to reclaim his starting role at the left-back spot this weekend.

But that will not necessary mean that Byram drops back to the bench as it is now Bogle's turn to face a one-game suspension for Saturday's meeting with the Pilgrims, for accumulating too many yellow cards.

Byram is a right-back by trade, and after his display last weekend, the former Norwich City defender will surely be called upon again by Farke to start in that position against Argyle.

Should that be the case, and he follows up his Bristol City showing with another impressive afternoon, the Leeds boss may come under increasing pressure to stick with Byram over his summer recruit by the Elland Road faithful.

Despite a slow start to his Leeds United career and a sub-par performance at Ashton Gate last weekend, Bogle has been largely impressive in a Whites shirt in recent weeks.

Arriving from fellow Championship rivals Sheffield United in the summer in a deal believed to be worth around £7m, the 24-year-old right-back has largely taken Byram's starting role away from him so far this campaign.

However, there's an old saying in football that goes: 'you're only as good as your last performance', and Bogle's latest display perhaps suggests he should avoid sitting too comfortably in his place in Farke's starting XI.

Byram is a proven, consistent performer at Championship level, and despite Bogle perhaps being able to offer more in attack than his teammate, Byram may well be the safer all-round option.

With Bogle left to stew on a disappointing performance until next Wednesday's trip to Millwall, now could be the perfect time for Byram to capitalise, and win back his place in the Leeds lineup moving forward.
