The Reds got off to a fast start going straight for the jugular of the Newcastle backline, just three minutes into the game Lewis Hall and Mo Salah had a coming together in which Salah and the rest of the Liverpool squad screamed for a penalty but Stuart Atwell made the decision to award Newcastle a free kick, much to the protest of the Anfield crowd. Eight minutes later Luis Diaz played in a ball with his weaker left foot to Dominik Szoboszlai whose first-time effort slid into the Newcastle net giving the Reds a nice early lead they craved for.

Throughout the first half, Liverpool remained dominant having possession mostly in Newcastle’s final third and looked threatening, up until the half-an-hour mark when a ball played over the top by Dan Burns caught Ibou Konate by surprise which Callum Wilson leapt on and was through on goal one on one with Alisson but somehow hit his shot wide! A huge let-off for Liverpool. Other than that the magpies hardly phased Liverpool in the opening half which ended 1-0 to the Reds.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw Newcastle have more possession as they seemed to edge closer towards Liverpool’s defence. Just minutes after kick-off, the visitors from the northeast were awarded a free kick within shooting distance, Kirkdale lad and boyhood Liverpool fan Anthony Gordon stepped up to take the set piece but it struck the first goal scorer of the night Dominik Szoboszlai in the face, job done by the Liverpool wall and no need for Alisson to make any movement.
Just when the second half was looking like a rather quiet affair, Alexis MacAllister picked up a loose ball played by Sandro Tonali and carried the ball from his own half to just yards outside of the opposition area and found Mo Salah out wide who then took only three touches of the ball before playing it back to MacAllister who’s first-time effort found the top corner to Nick Pope’s right hand side sending the famous Spion Kop into a burst of roars and cheers, “we shall not be moved” once again echoed around Anfield thanks to Liverpool’s second goal and discovering Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal dropped two points in a 0-0 draw away to Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool were back in control of the game and leading comfortably at 2-0, although could’ve grabbed a third goal in time as Salah received a pass from Szoboszlai and hit the ball with the outside of his boot Pope made sure he got his hand to it. Substitute Cody Gakpo looked as though he got his goal after entering the pitch in the 62nd minute but the goal was disallowed after a foul on Pope by Konate, however, 2-0 was the final score as Stuart Atwell blew his whistle for full time and Liverpool advanced to 13 points clear at the top of the premier league table.
