Liverpool Move for Wirtz Intensifies After Manchester City Exit

Clear Run for Wirtz Sparks Anfield Ambition

Liverpool’s summer transfer intentions have taken a decisive turn, with renewed focus on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. In a report by German publication BILD, the Reds have seemingly been handed a clear path to one of Europe’s most sought-after talents following Manchester City’s surprise withdrawal from the race.

Manchester City, long-term admirers of Wirtz, have reportedly stepped back due to the financial implications of a move that could have become their most expensive ever. “It is reported Pep Guardiola’s team is stepping back from their pursuit of the German international due to the escalating financial demands of the transfer,” BILD reported. With a potential total cost ballooning to €300 million when including fees and wages, City deemed the deal unfeasible.

FSG Greenlight Needed for Record Signing

Liverpool, however, remain undeterred. BILD reports that senior figures within the club are flying to Boston this week to discuss the financial package with Fenway Sports Group (FSG). “The bosses around football boss Michael Edwards (45) are to fly to Boston this week,” the report said. “Reason for the visit: The English want to get the figures for the Wirtz transfer approved by the club owners of the ‘Fenway Sports Group,’” it added.

The potential move for Wirtz is not just significant in terms of the fee. It represents a bold statement of intent from new manager Arne Slot and the club’s decision-makers as they seek to evolve the squad without undergoing wholesale changes.

Strategic Spending, Not Rebuilding

There’s a confidence in Liverpool’s transfer strategy that suggests this is about refinement, not revolution. “Liverpool has (the money to pay for Wirtz), because after the extensions of Virgil van Dijk (33) and Mo Salah (32), the championship team does not need to be rebuilt with great financial expenditure, but can be strengthened at the top,” BILD clarified.

That notion of strengthening “at the top” hints at a focused, elite recruitment policy. Wirtz, with his creativity, tactical maturity, and proven output under Xabi Alonso, fits that billing perfectly. Bayer Leverkusen, however, won’t part ways easily. “Leverkusen, is demanding a transfer fee of 150 million euros for its superstar, who still has a contract until 2027,” BILD added.

City’s Loss, Liverpool’s Opportunity?

Wirtz is a player who thrives between the lines, creates chaos in organised defences, and shows the kind of vision Anfield fans once marvelled at from Philippe Coutinho. If Liverpool manage to pull off the move, it could mark the most audacious statement of the post-Klopp era.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

It’s hard not to be excited reading this report. Florian Wirtz is exactly the type of player Liverpool have needed in recent seasons – someone who can link midfield and attack, unlock low blocks, and dictate tempo. What makes this news even more promising is that Liverpool seem serious about making it happen.

The fact that Michael Edwards is flying to Boston shows how high-level this operation is. It’s not a rumour. It’s not speculation. It’s a strategic move. And crucially, Manchester City dropping out changes everything. With Bayern still lurking, Liverpool must move swiftly, but they now have the financial muscle and structure to do it.

There will always be concern about the fee – €150 million is enormous – but if this is a player who can take Arne Slot’s Liverpool into the next chapter and deliver both now and long-term, then it’s the right time to strike. Wirtz isn’t just a future star. He’s already performing at elite level.

Fans will be buzzing that FSG is backing the manager and football structure this aggressively. If Liverpool get this deal done, it could be a landmark moment in this new era.
