Chelsea need a striker. They always did. Nicolas Jackson’s nice run of form helped us forget that for a while, but the best teams in history have always had more than one top class option up front – and many would dispute if we even have one at the moment.

Those sorts of players don’t come cheap, and that’s especially true when you’re competing with the very biggest teams around. That’s likely to happen in the chase for Ipswich’s Liam Delap, who is proving himself to be one of the brightest young striker options in the division as the season goes on.

Manchester United are named and that’s a link that makes a lot of sense – they need a striker even more than we do, and will be looking for a big move this summer to build the Ruben Amorim project around.

Even Liverpool will likely be on the market for a new forward in the summer, especially if Mo Salah leaves at the end of his contract.

Delap price continues to rise as more goals and more teams are added

So what are Chelsea’s chances? According to Football Insider, we’re certainly in the mix. Delap is still just 22 years old and has managed 9 goals already this season, despite playing for a team that looks certain to be relegated.

He impressed in his game against us in December, and has a nice mix of speed, size and finishing. The problem is that even if Ipswich are relegated, if he continues to score his price will only rise. The competition between top teams could put a crazy price tag on his head.

Football Insider note that, having only arrived at Portman Road last summer, Delap still 4 years left to run on his contract.
